Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 Review

SHARE:

On April 2018 Asus release new smartphone with huge changing and surprising anyone, longer battery life, bigger screen size, Android platform as operating system instead of ZenUI and competitive price. Its shocking every one including competitors. After 8 month Asus release the next generation called Zenfone Max Pro M2 with some upgrades.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 Design

If Zenfone Max Pro M1 using a metal body design, Asus has make Zenfone Max Pro M2 more premium. It using a metal frame along with a front and back glass design. Screen was covered with  Gorilla Glass 6 and back side was using wave pattern with glossy finish offering a premium look and feel. Its also reduce finger mark on back side body like Zenfone Max Pro M1.
Before we continue talk about design, you might want to know what will you get when you purchase Zenfone Max Pro M2 :
  • Device
  • Warranty card
  • Guide book
  • Soft case
  • Sim card Ejector
  • Adapter and USB Cable
  • Ear phone ( For 6GB RAM Only )

Zenfone Max Pro M2 was come with notch, i don't know why but as far i read every where, almost  every body was hate phone with notch, but did you know notch was help to having a higher screen-to-body ratio, while offering that extra screen space at the top. Unfortunately due using Android stock instead of ZenUI until now there is no option yet to hide this notch, we hope ASUS will be  provide this on next update FW.

Inside the notch there is front camera, LED flash and sensors. Earpiece is placed just above them.

Power button and Volume up / down was place on left side of phone, at the right side there is sim card tray, design still the same with previous model , 2 sim card and 1 memory card.

At the bottom part, you will find Micro USB port i/o USB Type-C, microphone, 3.5mm headphone jack, and loudspeaker.
Smartphones comes with 6.26-inch screen, with 19:9 aspect ratio. If  Zenfone Max M2 is using  HD+ display with resolution of 1520×720 pixels, Zenfone Max Pro M2 feature little bit higher full HD+ display and running at a resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 Performance

Zenfone Max Pro M2 using Snapdragon 660 SoC which is upgrade from Zenfone Max Pro M1 that using Snapdragon 636. This changing not only make Max Pro M2 more faster in process but also smarter.
I bet you also heard that Zenfone Max Pro M2 was under clock, its actually not correct. Zenfone Max Pro M2 using Processor SD660 which is clocked at 1.95GHz instead of 2.20GHz. If you are checking Qualcomm’s spec sheet, they are actually provide Snapdragon 660 in two different clock speeds to meet different OEM’s requirements. Reason why ASUS decide to use 1.95GHz because according to internal test and experience for battery consumption and longer gaming sessions, any phone using 2.2GHz will make your arm feel warm. Besides lower temperatures, the SD660 version 1.95GHz is more efficient, but don't worry you will not feel any significant difference in performance, except on benchmark result ONLY. That's enough to be a strong reason why ASUS choose SD660 with 1.95GHz.
I am using 2 different application to do benchmark, An tutu benchmark and PC Mark. The result as below.

I also has been try to play some games, Asphalt 9 and PES 2019. Both game work without any lag or any issue.

Finger Print and Face Recognize also working without any issue, you can unlock your device without delay. Put your finger on sensor it will automatically unlock device. For face recognition unfortunately not working automatically when you lift your phone, need you to push power first until screen was turn on, face recognition will work like charm.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 Battery

Zenfone Max Pro M2 was using 5000 mAh, as i mention previously it also the reason why ASUS choose 1.95GHz  to maximize the battery life without compromising on the user experience. You can play PUBG non stop with out stop for 7.3 hours, play Mobile Legend for 7.1 hours. Its really non stop gaming experience as promised by ASUS.
Larger battery means longest charging, charging with original charger 5V/2A was quite long. It take 2 .55 minute for charge form 1% to 100%. But its actually support for Fast charging because ASUS has fast charging technology, which it develops itself based on developers needs to maintain user security and comfortable but you need to use Quick charge USB cable. Below is my battery usage with daily using.

Asus Zenfone Max Pro M2 Camera

Good battery life, good performance will still not make everyone happy if didn't have a good camera.
Zenfone Max Pro M2 was come with 12-mega pixel primary camera,  f/1.8 aperture, and  5-mega pixel secondary depth sensor. Camera support EIS and 4K video recording capabilities. For  front camera, you will find 13-mega pixel with f/2.0 aperture and an LED flash. Also support AI features, and the camera sensor upgraded to Sony IMX486 sensor. If you not satisfied with camera result, you can install G CAM on Zenfone Max Pro M2.

You can see setting camera on Zenfone Max Pro M2 and some of the picture result.

Here is some picture result

Conclusion

ZenFone Max Pro M2 has some big upgrade from the previous models ZenFone Max Pro M1. Asus has definitely got our attention by giving this phone a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 SoC and a big 5000 mAh battery. Performance and battery life are both very good.
Camera result was good enough for taking picture, with AI scene detection along with EIS and bokeh mode what else you need?.
Asus also seems to have gotten the pricing right for the ZenFone Max Pro M2. Starting at Rp. 2.799.000 for 3/32, Rp 3.199.000 for 4/64 and Rp 3.699.000 for the highest varian 6/64.
Go with stock Android was a smart move, even i miss  a game genie application on this phone, consider this is gaming phone. Notification sometime is disturb me when i play a game.
Most of all, this is a phone you need to put on your list if you have planned to change your phone.
